I’m a advent fan of food, blogging, art and photography, living in South Africa, Mpumalanga.
I am a wife and working mom with a stressful job that have to travel quite a distance to and from work each day leaving me with limited time on my hands.
I enjoy eating healthy and have only recently discovered my true love…Food! I used to be constantly on a diet which left me feeling deprived and depressed.
One morning I realized I should embrase my love for food and stop trying NOT to enjoy it.
I came to realize that even healthy food can be good enjoyable food! you don’t have to eat salads for the rest of your life to be skinny. It’s all about balance.
I’ve decided to live healthier permanently and got rid of all the “diets” that teach you what to eat for a week and then leave you high and dry while you try to figure out why you ate that Chocolate after all!
This doesn’t mean I will never have a chocolate or a glass of wine ever again, this is about learning myself to make peace with food. To end this quilt driven feelings with food that has been haunting me for so many years.
This blog is all about learning new techniques, new ingredients and new ways to serve up classic dishes in a healthy way, with a little indulgence from time to time. Keeping the two harsh food critics at home happy will be the ultimate test!
Enjoy the journey with me, I don’t know where we will end up, hopefully it will be healthier and a few pounds lighter while I still enjoy my meals!
Please leave a comment, I would love to hear your thoughts and to learn from my fellow bloggers.

Hello
Thanks for your lovely comment on my little blog. I just thought I would let you know that my blog has moved and is now bighungrygnomes.co.uk. Unfortunately, if you want to remain subscribed to my blog, you will have re-subscribe to this new address. I realise this is a little bit of a nuisance but I would really appreciate your continuing support and interest in my blog
Thanks

I look forward to getting some inspiration from you to keep up my local eating challenge. Keep the recipes coming!
Yeah! My mom decided to join me in this local eating adventure and she lost 5 pounds in a week. Mostly because our diet is 60 or 70 percent vegetables now. No more processed foods. Yay!

Thank you for liking my post. I was born in Durban and lived in Cape Town as child. I am catering at my wedding in England. I would like to include a South African dish or two as part of the buffet/ bbq type meal… Any ideas what I could do… Like the blog…
Hi There, weddings! that exciting when is the big day? How about Bobotie as part of the buffet, or even a crumble maize pap with a chakalaka relish if you want to serve it with a bbq. I will let you know if anything else comes to mind. Thank you for the visit.
The braai convinced me, I’m subscribing.
lol! thank you, in this case I will have to braai some more! (or ask hubby to do so since he is the braai master).
I fairly recently added this website to my google reader, good stuff. Can’t get enough!
it’s just great to have you blogging with such a good approach… can’t wait to go through your recipes…
by the way, next to food, I think it is also important to make peace with oneself…
take care,
Daniela
Hi Daniela
Thanks for the visit. Hope you enjoy you the recipes.
Goodness! I just discovered this site by chance. I love your stories. I love food and love cooking it. I love cooking sites, studying recipes, cooking stles, techniques, from Indian, asian, italian, from mexican to french. I cook anything. My love for good food versus the battle of the bulge is my challenge too.
But your site is so homely and all about family, your stories are warm and wonderful. Good old fashion healthy cooking. Honestly, your site, and writing style reminds me of Nigella Lawson and her website.
Love your spice pot. I have two, one for all my whole spices, and one for all my ground spices.
I am your latest fan
Thank you! I’m sooo glad you enjoy my blog. I love Nigella and I love my spices so we have a lot in common! I was thinking about getting a second pot just the other day for all the whole spices, sometimes I think I’m addicted to spices I’m past the stage where I use it for only flavour
Hey there, Sunshine. I’m sure you get this all the time…I nominated you for The Sunshine Award. Congrats! You’ve brought the sunshine in with you! Your friend, Lweendo @luckyluwi
Hi there! awww thank you! that is sooo sweet of you.
Love you approach- healthy and balanced. Healthy does not mean you can’t indulge yourself! Look forward to more yummy posts from you
Thanks for visiting, I look forward to your post as well!
As a foodie myself, I have been struggling to come to term with my love of food and the battle of the bulge, but at 50+ have decided that enough is enough, I can eat healthy and the foods I like, and I will.
I’m a fan of Jamie Oliver too, and have a number of his books…
Love your blog!
I know what you mean, thanks for the visit.
Great thoughts and attitude towards embracing food. Just working my way through it too – we all are! New reader – cheers! ~ Shira
So glad you decided not to give up on food! Your blog looks great.
I’ts easy, just don’t tell them…lol, as long as they think they eat “food” and not “healthy food” they won’t moan and groan with every new recipe you try.
This is an excellent mission. I, to am trying to move my family into healthier eating habits.
good attitude!! looking forward to having a look through your recipes
Amy
Thanks Amy, I just wish I have more time to blog! , don’t we all….lol
